Relief and geological features

The National Park is characterized by an exceptional diversity of morphological forms.

Certainly the most attractive and most valuable parts of southern Velebit are impressive canyons of Velika and Mala Paklenica.

Velika Paklenica Canyon is 14 km, a width of 500-800 m. At its narrowest point, the canyon is only 50 m wide on both sides of the canyon, there are vertical cliffs, some of which are more than 700 m. The most attractive part of an area of steep fall of the stream downstream of Anića port, where a steep rise just above the hips and streams form the narrowest part of the canyon between Anica and airport parking.

Mala Paklenica Canyon is a more modest scale and it flowing stream which is much weaker. It is 12 km wide and 400-500 m in its narrowest part is only 10 m wide, while the surrounding rocks rising to a height of 650 m. The transition between the canyons of Velika and Mala Paklenica is a very inaccessible area of karst rocks and hips.

For the central part of the park is the relief complex Borovnik and Black top, and in its vicinity are udolinska expansion of small and large Močila. Great powers are embossed very interesting bowl-shaped valley at an altitude of 850 m / nm, surrounded by a black top (1110 m / nm), Škiljini hair (1015 m / nm) and green care (842 m / nm), while the southern edge extends Borovnik, named after a forest of pine.

The eastern part of the park geomorphologically distinctly differentiated, rugged and wild. Further to the east, this zone goes into the wilderness area in the milder forms part of the Small and Great Libinje that make karst plateau with many sinkholes whose bottoms were mainly investigated.

Peak area of National Park Paklenica is a narrow ridge of Velebit, a width of 1-3 km. This is the highest peak of Velebit – Vaganski peak (1757 m / nm).
Geological features of the National Park are visible in the hot area of karst in Bojinac, Vidakovog hip and on the plateau between the two canyons. There is an abundance of many forms of karst topography, such as cracks, zlib, oysters, holes, crevices and caves that formed intense action of water, and large temperature differences during certain seasons.
